Did you know that most humans think that a little 15 minute walk or having a big backyard is enough of a daily work out for their furry companion? Did you know that most dogs sleep all night, then sit in a crate or house all day? How do you think you would react if you were asked to do nothing for 23 hours per day!
That is a lot of resting! Dogs are built to run and play! It is your duty as our guardian to ensure that we are actually getting tired!
Backyards are a great way to give your puppy a work out! They are also a great excuse to feign ignorance. Most of you human types let your dog out and figure he will run around and tire himself out all alone. Have you ever watched us when we are alone outside? We loaf around exploring, we don’t run around in circles!
You have to come outside and play with us so that we can get our energy out. That’s right you have to spend 30 minutes less watching that noisy colorful box and come spend time with your dog!
Fifteen minutes strolling down the sidewalk might be enough for your pet hamster but for a canine a short walk means nothing. We need to actually get our heart-rate up! We need to feel tired! Here are some easy ways to make a walk into an actual work out:
Take your dog to an off-leash area and let them run with other dogs!
Run with your dog.
Rollerblade with your dog.
Bike with your dog.
Go to the park and play fetch.
Go for a longer hike in a local park or ravine.
While At Home
Even when at home you can do things to help your dog use up more energy!
Give us fun toys that distract us from just sleeping all the time.
Include us in your life! Don’t just ignore us, talk to us as you walk around the house. Show us what you are doing. Invoke our curiosity and we will pay more attention instead of just sleeping.
See! There are tons of ways to give your dog a good work out during the day! You no longer have any excuses. Smaller dogs, of course, require less than big ones but no matter what type of dog you have they shouldn't be living their life like a stuffed animaljust sitting on your bed all day.
Even if you don’t have time to give your dog the exercise he or she needs you should at least take them to doggy daycare or hire a dog-walker during the day.
So! Have at it! Go take your dog for a run! You might notice more than just benefits for your dog...
